As you roam the world of Sanctuary in Diablo 4, you’ll stumble upon chests that spawn in dedicated areas around the map.
While the vast majority of the chests that you find are the basic chests simply named “Chest”, you’ll occasionally find the much-rarer Silent Chest, which you need a Whispering Key to open.

To get a Whispering Key in Diablo 4, go to the Murmuring Obols vendor called Purveyor of Curiosities in any major town and purchase one from them for 20 Murmuring Obols. When you have a Whispering Key in your inventory, you can open a Silent Chest by clicking, just like with a regular chest, and the Whispering Key will be consumed.

How to Get Whispering Key in Diablo 4
You get Whispering Keys in Diablo 4 by purchasing them from the Murmuring Obols vendor, called the Purveyor of Curiosities, in any major town. One Whispering Key costs 20 Murmuring Obols.
If you have a decent amount of Murmuring Obols, it can be a good idea to purchase a couple of Whispering Keys, as you then don’t have to go back to town and risk someone else opening the chest while you purchase a key.
The Whispering Key is located in the “Consumables” tab in your inventory.
How to open a Silent Chest in Diablo 4
To open Silent Chests in Diablo 4, you simply need to left-click it while you have a Whispering Key in your inventory. Upon opening the Silent Chest, one Whispering Key will be consumed from your inventory.
If you happen to find a Silent Chest in the game but don’t have a key, you can quickly go back to town and purchase one.
The Silent Chest will remain where you found it until someone opens it, so all you have to hope while you go back to get a key is that no one else happens to come by and open it.
How to find Silent Chests
Silent Chests can appear in the same locations that regular chests can appear around the world of Diablo 4.
To find a Silent Chest in Diablo 4, you need to go to the locations where regular chests spawn and hope that a Silent Chest has appeared instead.
The chance of a Silent Chest appearing instead of a regular one is very low. We once tried to find one, and we ended up opening more than 50 chests and didn’t even find a Silent Chest. Then at a later time, we randomly stumbled upon one.
