Coal is an essential item for players to mine, not just to sell on the Grand Exchange, but to train their Smithing skill. Coal can be found in various places around RuneScape, scattered in the form of Coal rocks that can be mined at 30 Mining.
Here, we’ll talk about ten different locations, as well as go through any other requirements that would be needed to access/mine in these areas.

Where to Mine Coal in OSRS
Coal is one of the most essential items for players in OSRS, both for its use for leveling up smithing and as a good to sell on the Grand Exchange. In this guide, we present some of the best locations to mine Coal.
Some of the locations have requirements of varying degrees, while others have none. You can find the location that suits you the best below.
Locations With No Requirements to Mine/Access
Falador Mines
Just next to the Party Room northeast in Falador, you can go down the stairs to access a portion of the Dwarven Mine.
Among the iron, gold, mithril, and adamantite rocks, you will also find 7 Coal rocks to mine from.
However, if you have a low combat level, be wary of the level-14 Scorpions and level-32 King Scorpions that spawn in this area.
Lumbridge Swamp
South-west of Lumbridge are 7 Coal rocks available for you to mine.
The closest banks to here are the ones in Draynor Village and Lumbridge Castle.
Al Kharid Mine
Towards the back of Al Kharid mine are 3 Coal rocks available to mine.
Once more: if you’re low-level be careful of the Level-14 Scorpions here. Chances are you will have visited this mine at least once post-leaving Tutorial Island.
Barbarian Village
Right in the center of Barbarian Village are 4 Coal rocks for you to mine.
This is one of the closer locations to a bank, as players can deposit their coal in Edgeville just north of here.
Kourend Castle
Just outside Kourend Castle are 4 Coal rocks that you can mine.
There are also Iron, Gold, and at higher levels Mithril and Adamantite rocks to mine.
Locations With Low Requirements
The Mining Guild
Just below Falador is the Mining Guild, which requires 60 Mining to access. Once you do, you will have dozens of ores at your disposal.
If you have a members account, you will also be able to deposit your Coal directly in the bank chest on the west side of the guild.
Coal Trucks by Seer’s Village
Located west of Seer’s Village, you can run past McGrubor’s Wood and come across some coal trucks.
Past that, you will need 20 Agility to cross a log balance and access an area that has 18 Coal rocks to mine. This is also the same area where the Dwarf Cannon quest starts.
Be careful, as there are Level-27 Bats here that will attack you if you are low-level.
Edgeville Dungeon
With a Brass key (which can be bought from the Grand Exchange for around 300gp), you can access the shed just southwest of the entrance to the Grand Exchange and go down into a portion of Edgeville Dungeon.
If you can manage to avoid the Hill Giants, Zombies, Hobgoblins, and Skeletons, all ranging from Level-28 to Level-42, you will be treated to 5 Coal rocks to mine.
The main benefit here is it’s right next to the Grand Exchange, so you can quickly sell your Coal with ease.
Locations With Med/High Requirements
Lovakite Mine
To players that have 30% Lovakengj favour, they can mine the 40+ Coal rocks available in Lovakite mine.
The best part: it’s right next to multiple bank booths to deposit straight away!
Getting here can be a bit tricky. If you aren’t comfortable walking the entire distance, you can use a Xeric’s Talisman, going to “Xeric’s Inferno” and running west to the mine.
Trahaearn Mine in Prifddinas
Players who have completed the “Song of the Elves” quest, are able to access Trahaearn Mine in Prifddinas.
There are many perks to having access to the lost elven city and having free range to 19 Coal rocks (as well as every other ore rock you can think of) is certainly one of them.
There are no monsters to worry about, but completing a Grandmaster quest is no easy task. Take it from me, that it’s worth it in the long run.
Those are the best places to mine Coal in Old School RuneScape!
