Besides farming, fishing was the most reliable way to get food in the early days of Raft. Crafting a fishing rod is an easy task, but knowing how to fish is a different story.

Before you can start fishing, you must first craft either a Wooden Fishing Rod or a Metal Fishing Rod and equip it.

To fish in Raft, hold the left mouse click and then release it to cast the line into the ocean, wait till the float starts moving down and your fishing rod is displayed on the left side of the screen, and then left-click again to catch the fish.

How to Fish in Raft

To fish in Raft, you must craft one of the following items:

  • Wooden Fishing Rod: can be used 10 times. You need 6 Planks and 8 Ropes.
  • Metal Fishing Rod: can be used 30 times. You need 3 Scraps, 1 Bolt, and 8 Ropes.

If you can’t find the recipes for fishing rods in the Tools tab, you must build a Research Table and research the fishing rod’s ingredients first.

The usage time is only reduced if you successfully catch a fish or item, so you can stop fishing at any time you like, which is convenient if a shark is attacking your raft.

Once you have a fishing rod, put it in the hot bar and equip it in your hand.

Next, cast the fishing line into the ocean by left-clicking your mouse.

Although you can hold the left mouse button to charge and release it to cast the line farther, it’s advisable just to left-click to cast the line right where you are.

It may look unrealistic, but you can still fish this way. It saves you a lot of time from charging over and over.

After casting the line, wait for about 5-10 seconds.

Once you see the float (or bobber) start moving, and your character pulls the fishing rod to the left, left-click again to catch the fish.

It’s as easy as that! To simplify the process, you just need to: Left-click > Wait > Left-click.

Later in the game, you will be able to trade and use different types of bait to catch exotic fish.

To catch those fish, equip your fishing rod like usual, hold the right mouse click to open the bait selection panel, and select the bait you want. After that, you can catch exotic fish by just fishing normally.

Those new exotic fish can only be used for trading purposes. If you want to fish for food and crafting items, remember to leave the bait slot empty.

What Are the Differences Between the 2 Fishing Rods?

You’ll get the same fish and items regardless of which fishing rod you use in Raft. The only difference is the chance of catching specific fish or items.

Below is a table listing all the fish and items you can get from fishing in Raft, including the chance of catching each fish or item with each of the two rods fishing rods. The bolded names are fish.

It’s better to use Metal Fishing Rods for fishing, as they last longer and have a higher chance of catching bigger fish.

However, if you don’t have access to Metal Ingot yet or you want to get the Raw Herring and Pomfret to craft Shark Bait, then it’s better to use the Wooden Fishing Rod.
