One of the worst things that can happen in Stardew Valley is placing a chest in a spot, filling it up with a lot of resources, and then realizing that you want to move it. Most players will not want to empty the chest, remove it, and then place it in a new place.
That would just be a huge waste of time, and you will also probably need a new chest where you will have to move the resources before picking up the chest. And, unfortunately, for a really long time, players had to do just that, even if they only wanted the chest one or two tiles away.

Luckily, with the 1.5 update, ConcernedApe added a mechanic that will allow players to move chests without actually having to empty them and pick them up. The only problem is that you won’t be able to move it to a really far place if you don’t have patience.
To move chests in Stardew Valley, you just have to tap the chest with the Use Tool button (left-click) with nothing in your hands multiple times until it moves in the opposite direction. If the tile where opposite your direction is filled, the chest will move to the next empty tile next to it.

How to Move Chests in Stardew Valley
To move a chest in Stardew Valley, you just need to repeatedly tap it while holding nothing in your hands. If you do this, the chest will jump a tile in the opposite direction from you.
If something is in the way, it will jump to the left or right. There is no way to move the chest as you would buildings from the Carpenter. Also, if all directions around the chest are occupied besides the one you are approaching it from, the chest will jump behind you.
You either slowly move it tile by tile while it holds items inside or empty it and pick it up to move it. After you empty it, you also have to do the same thing you did to move it to pick it up.
Just repeatedly tap it until it becomes a smaller item. Players can also pick up chests, if they are empty, by hitting them with a tool.
So, if you placed a chest at the Mines or next to a fishing spot, you will have to empty it before moving it to a better location. But, if all you want to do is position it in a better location, just tap it repeatedly with your empty hands.
