In Stardew Valley, players do their best to revive their grandfather’s farm in the quirky village of Pelican Town. As you spend time trying to plant and grow crops, you can end up making a lot of mistakes at the start.
The plans you have for your farm in the first few days are very different from what you might want to do in the later seasons. If you till the soil all over your farm to grow a lot of crops, you might notice that there are better spots to do what you want.

Leaving the ground tilled can look ugly and will ruin the aesthetics of your farm. Most players know that, in time, tilled soil will untill itself just by waiting. However, that is not an efficient way to get the job done.
To untill soil in Stardew Valley, you can either hit it with a Pickaxe or move buildings over it at the Carpenter’s Shop.

How to Untill Soil in Stardew Valley
There are two ways to untill soil in Stardew Valley:
- Hit the soil with a Pickaxe
- Move a building over the soil
Both methods are good depending on the situation, and you are more likely to do the one that is more convenient in the moment.
Untill Soil with a Pickaxe
The easiest way to untill soil in Stardew Valley is to hit it with a Pickaxe. Exactly the same way you hit the ground with a Hoe to till it, you just have to hit it with a Pickaxe to untill it.
If there is a crop that is growing on top of the tilled ground, you will first remove that crop when you hit it with a Pickaxe, leaving the soil tilled. You will have to hit it a second time to actually get untill the soil.
This method is very fast and will be helpful if you misclicked and hit the wrong spot on the ground while preparing your farm.
However, this method will waste a maximum of 2 Energy each time you hit the ground. This means that you would waste a lot of Energy if you wanted to untill a large piece of land to move your farm.
Untill Soil with Buildings
If you have a large piece of land that you need to untill in Stardew Valley, you will have to move a building over it. Here is how to untill soil in Stardew Valley using buildings:
- Talk to Robin at the Carpenter’s Shop.
- Choose the “Construct Farm Buildings” option.
- Press the Move Buildings button, which is shown as four arrows pointing outward.
- Select a building, place it over the tilled soil, and then move it where you actually want that building to stay.
The moment you drop a building over tilled soil, it will instantly untill. You can then move the building wherever you actually want it, and the ground will stay untilled.
If you are in the early days and you don’t have any buildings on your farm, you can move the Shipping Bin to the right of the Farmhouse. Just select it, move it where you want to untill the soil, and then put it back in its place.
You can use the Shipping Bin in the future as well for fine-tuning since it only removes two tiles of tilled soil.
Large buildings, such as the Greenhouse, are extremely useful with this method since they can erase a lot of tilled soil with ease.
