As you play through FFXIV, you may notice you begin stacking up hundreds of gear pieces. This gear will sit in your inventory until you do something about it.
It may be difficult to let go of this old gear at first, but the longer you wait, the more will stack up, which can be overwhelming. It’s highly recommended to start organizing your gear and getting rid of what you don’t want as early as possible.

The options for disposing of gear in FFXIV in a beneficial way involve selling it, desynthesizing it, or turning it into glamour. If you’re selling it, you can turn it into your Grand Company (the best way most of the time), sell it on the Marketboard (if allowed), or “sell” it at the Doman Enclave.

What Can You Do With Old Gear in Final Fantasy XIV?
There isn’t just one way to get rid of old gear in FFXIV, which is why many new players become confused hearing about different methods from their friends.
But when you list every method, it becomes easier to understand and helps you make a smart and calculated decision.
Sell It on the Marketboard
If the gear you possess can be sold on the Marketboard, you won’t see the phrase “Market Prohibited” at the bottom of the item description.
The “Sells for…” line has nothing to do with Marketboard price and instead is the price that you will get if you sell it to a random vendor. Never do this.
Instead, take the eligible gear and go to your retainer. I won’t go in-depth on how to sell stuff via a retainer because that’s a whole guide in itself.
But the gist is that you give your items to the retainer to sell and set your price. You can use the options of the retainer to check the going price of the item.
Sell It to the Grand Company
Selling eligible items to your Grand Company for Company Seals is a fan-favorite option for what to do with old gear in FFXIV.
To do that, you have to head to your Grand Company headquarters and follow these steps.
Note: if these options aren’t available, you need to rank up in your Grand Company
- Talk to Personnel Officer (ex. Serpent Personnel Officer)
- Click on “Undertake Supply and Provisioning Missions”
- Go to the Expert Delivery tab
- Ensure “Hide Gear Set Items” is active so you won’t sell the gear you use
- Click on an item you want to sell
- Click Deliver
Make sure you use your Grand Company seals before they cap, or else you’ll throw away your gear for nothing. Spend the seals at the Grand Company Quartermaster.
To increase your cap and unlock new items, rank up in your Grand Company.
Store It for Future Jobs
Don’t forget that switching classes on a regular basis is normal in FFXIV. So even if you main one class, you should keep good gear for other classes.
You can store unused gear in your retainer’s inventory. The best gear to keep for other classes is high-level gear, gear that the other class is almost ready for, and exclusive gear that is hard to get.
If you don’t mind spending the money, you can buy up to nine retainers from the Mog Station, which gives you more space than you’ll know what to do with.
So that’s always an option if you’re not committed to a decision about your old gear.
Desynthesize It
Desynthesizing may not clear up inventory room, but it will clear up Armory Chest space and give you rare items once you rank up your desynthesizing skills.
This is something that is great for certain trial gear because you can get rare materials worth much more than the item itself.
Make It a Glamour
If you like the look of the old gear but don’t need to use it as armor, you can put it in your glamour dresser.
To do this, head to an inn room and interact with your Glamour Dresser.
There is a learning curve (which I won’t get into right now) to creating glamour plates and equipping them, but the point is to make your armor look one way but still retain its stats.
Any armor piece can be used as glamour.
Doman Enclave
After you’ve started the Stormblood Doman Enclave Reconstruction questline, you can start turning in items via the Donation Basket to receive gil and unlock exclusive items.
The items you unlock are Kugane-style, such as a haori and Eastern Asian sliding screen. The longer you work on the Doman Enclave, the more gil you get for turning in items, as it works on a multiplier.
Discard It
If none of the above options work out for you and you need armory chest space immediately, you can always throw the gear away.
This is not recommended, but it can work in a pinch, such as when you’re in a dungeon and need more space. To discard an item, right-click and discard or drag it off the inventory window.
What is the Best Thing to Do with Old Gear in FFXIV?
The best thing to do with old gear in FFXIV depends on what you can do with it.
For dungeon gear, which should be the majority of your old gear, the best thing to do is turn it into your Grand Company.
For non-dungeon gear that isn’t Market Prohibited, the best thing to do with old gear is sell it on the Marketboard.
Even if you only get a few thousand gil for it, this really stacks up over time, so don’t underestimate the Marketboard at any phase in your FFXIV journey.
That’s all you need to know about the best things to do with old gear in FFXIV.
