What class you choose to play heavily affects gameplay throughout the entire game, as each class has a completely different feel, skill set, and playstyle.
If you’re a new player to Diablo in general or just Diablo 4, you understandably might not be sure what class to pick. This guide will give you suggestions to help you make your decision.

The class that we believe is best for new players to pick in Diablo 4 is the Sorcerer class, a powerful mage with both strong ranged spells, smaller spell summonings, and defensive and mobility abilities. This class is well-rounded and ranged, so you don’t have any particular downfall you have to keep in mind as some other classes do.

What class to play in Diablo 4 as a new player
It’s always a difficult task to pick what class to play in an RPG, especially if you’re a newer player.
Diablo 4 has five different classes you can pick between:
- Barbarian
- Necromancer
- Sorcerer
- Rogue
- Druid
While all of these classes are more than viable to play, some of them are better suited for newer players than others.
From our experience, the best class for new players to choose is the Sorcerer class. It is not only deemed one of the best classes in Diablo 4 by most players, but it is the most well-rounded class in the game.
The Sorcerer is, first and foremost, a ranged class, which can be a large advantage for new players getting to know the game. It has great defenses through its abilities, high damage output, and more mobility than most classes.
Lastly, it is also a class with many build opportunities and combos, which means that though you’ll do well just spamming one or two abilities, it is still challenging to attain its full damage output potential when you reach the end-game and can start doing more combos and rotations.
If you don’t want to play a mage, two other classes that we recommend new players try are the Barbarian and Necromancer classes.
The Barbarian class is a powerful warrior that can use several types of weapons, including swords, axes, maces, polearms, and hammers. This is a melee class, which means you’ll be up-close slashing through foes, but you do have great mobility through a leap.
Furthermore, you can choose to build the Barbarian either tanky, damage-focused, or a mix between both, giving you a lot of freedom to how you wish to play. For newer players, it’s a great idea to spec into some defensive abilities and passives, as it’ll be a major help against powerful enemies.
The Necromancer is a unique class that is heavily focused on summoning the undead to fight by its side. While this class does not have any mobility-based abilities, it doesn’t need them, as you can walk around with an army around you, and you have decent defensive stats yourself.
Being one of the most straightforward classes to play but still bringing a unique skill set and playstyle, the Necromancer is also a great pick for new players.
The reason why we don’t believe the Rogue and Druid classes may be the most suitable for new players is that Rouges are very squishy later on in the game, making it tough to survive against powerful enemies, and the Druid class can seem very slow, and clunky in its combat, at least early on in the game, which can be offputting to some players. Later on, when you can unlock more and more abilities, this does change, however.
Much of the progress in the game, like the Renown system, is shared across the entire account, which means if you decide to start over as a new class, all the progress you’ve made hasn’t gone to waste.
Those are our recommendations for what class new players should pick in Diablo 4!
