In Stardew Valley, players will have to hoard a lot of resources, ranging from crops seeds to ores and minerals. All of these items are important, but ores are the main way you will improve your tools and weapons.
There are 4 types of ores in Stardew Valley, and all of them will help you upgrade your tools, make new useful items and buildings, and just overall improve your experience.

How to Smelt Copper Ores and Make Copper Bars in Stardew Valley
To smelt Copper Ores and make Copper Bars in Stardew Valley, you will first need to make a Furnace. To unlock the Furnace recipe, you will need to get one Copper Ore and wait for a day.
On the second day, Clint will visit you on the farm and will give you the recipe for the Furnace in a cutscene. To craft the Furnace, you will need 5 Copper Ores and 1 Coal. You can get both from the Mines.
Once crafted, you can place the Furnace anywhere on your farm. Some players like using a Shed to place all of their Furnaces. However, you can just place them outside if you don’t mind wasting some farming space.
To smelt Copper Ores in Stardew Valley, you just need to hold them in your hand and use them on the Furnace. If you also have Coal in your inventory, 5 Copper Ores will move into the Furnace, and the machine will fire up.
You can tell you did the right thing if the inside of the Furnace is burning up. Now, wait for 30 in-game minutes, and you will get one Copper Bar.
If you don’t want to smelt your copper and just get bars some other way, you can also get Copper Bars by killing Shadow Brutes and Shadow Shamans. They have a 4% chance to drop Copper Bars each time you defeat them.
However, they both spawn from floor 81 onward in the Mines, which is a moment in time when you should have more than enough Furnaces.
What Can You Make With Copper Bars in Stardew Valley
Copper Bars are very useful in the early Stardew Valley playthrough as they can help you make some of the most important items in the game.
Copper Tools
First of all, you will need to upgrade your main tools to start getting better and better resources:
- Copper Hoe
- Copper Pickaxe
- Copper Axe
- Copper Watering Can
- Copper Trash Can
All of these tools cost 2k g and 5 Copper Bars to upgrade. To upgrade your tools in Stardew Valley, you will need to go to the Blacksmith and select the “Upgrade Tools” option.
With a Copper Hoe, you can hold down the Use Tool button (left click) to till 3 tiles in a row in one hit.
The Copper Pickaxe will allow you to break rocks from levels 41 to 79 and copper nodes in 2 hits. You will also break rocks from floors 1 to 39 in one hit.
With the help of the Copper Axe, Stardew Valley players can start chopping down trees faster and start chopping huge tree stumps for Hardwood.
One of the better upgrades is the Copper Watering Can, which will increase the number of tiles you can water without refiling from 40 to 55 and give you the ability to hold down the Use Tool button to water 3 tiles in a line at once.
The last upgrade that you can get is the Copper Trash Can. With the help of this tool, each time you delete an item, you will get 15% of its monetary value back. Without this tool, you wouldn’t get anything back.
Craftable Items
There are also a lot of items you can personally craft using Copper Bars in Stardew Valley. Probably the most important items that you can make using Copper Bars are the Sprinkler, Crab Pot, Tapper, and Transmute (Fe).
The Sprinkler will revolutionize your life as a farmer. Finally, you won’t have to spend time every day watering each and every one of your crops. With the help of the Sprinkler, you can ignore your crops most of the time besides harvest day.
The Crab Pot will allow you to level up your Fishing skill without actually having to go through the horrible fishing minigame. Once you get to higher levels, you can actually start fishing and not regret all your life decisions.
The Tapper will allow you to passively get good resources such as Maple Syrup and Oak Resin. You can sell or gift all of these resources. The Tapper is an amazing source of money for people that don’t want to make special food items every day for Energy.
Lastly, the Transmute (Fe) “item” will allow you to turn Copper Bars into Iron Bars. This means that you won’t have to delve into the deep ends of the Mines and can just use the large reserves of Copper Ore you’ve collected to also get Iron Bars.
Here is a list of all of them, along with the needed number of Copper Bars, the skill level to unlock the recipe, and what the item does:
