One of the first items you will get in Stardew Valley, besides the tools that will help you start working, is food. There are a lot of fruits, vegetables, and cooked dishes you can get in this game.

All of these foods are extremely useful if you want to make the most out of everyday life and will help your character stay away while working.

Though food is a huge part of the game, newer players can have problems actually eating the food they have in their inventory.

To eat food in Stardew Valley, you need to select it in your hotbar (the bar at the bottom of the screen with items) and press the Do Action button.

Why You Should Eat Food in Stardew Valley

Food is extremely important in Stardew Valley, as it increases Energy. If you are just getting started, you should know that most actions will lower Energy.

If your Energy reaches 0, your character will faint, and you will lose all the available time that day.

One risk that appears if fainting happens often is that you could also lose money and the items in your inventory.

This is why food is a main part of the game strategy, as you need it to stay awake during the day and finish all the possible work before bedtime.

There are also different types of cooked food that can give you buffs to stats, allowing you to move faster, fish better, or be luckier that day.

All of these buffs can make a huge difference and will help you out a lot to make money.

How to Eat Food in Stardew Valley

Players can eat food in Stardew Valley by following these simple steps:

  1. Select the food item in the hotbar (the inventory bar at the bottom of the screen). Don’t open your inventory to select the food, as you can’t consume it while on that screen.
  2. Press the Do Action button (right-click or X on PC and PlayStation, or A on the Xbox and Nintendo Switch).
  3. The game will ask you if you want to eat that piece of food. Say yes.

Some common mistake that newer players make is going into the inventory menu to try to eat the food. This won’t work. You can only eat if you are holding the food above your head.

If you have bought the bag upgrade and have more rows in the inventory, you might not see the food in the hotbar.

If you can’t see the food in the hotbar, you can change the row of the inventory that you see by pressing Shift Toolbar buttons (Tab on PC, R1/L1 on PS, L/R on Switch, and RB/LB on Xbox).
